1. Newspaper to the rescue!

Spread out some newspaper on the counter and dump the contents of the junk drawer on top. Sort through and throw out anything that is broken, outdated, or you haven’t missed since it went in the drawer. The newspaper will keep any tiny debris contained, and you can easily wad up the newspaper with the debris and throw it away when you’re done sorting.

2. Like attracts like

Group related items together so you can find things more quickly. Scissors with tape, matches with birthday candles, mini post-its with pens.

3. Newspaper is your BFF

Cut a piece of newspaper to the size of the drawer. Bring it along when you shop for drawer inserts to help you puzzle together a close fit. It’s OK if the pieces don’t fill the space exactly; gaps can hold items like rulers.

4. Small compartments you probably already have

Consider using muffin tins, ice cube trays, or even egg cartons for organizing your mini-groupings.

5. Purge, purge, purge

Go through your junk drawer on a regular basis. Tag it onto a monthly or seasonal task you already do, like seasonal deep cleaning or monthly bill paying night.
